The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences seeks to advance knowledge of language and communication science and related disorders through teaching, research and service at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. And at the GW Speech and Hearing Center — which is housed and operated by the department — our faculty of certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists train graduate students to serve those with communication impairments throughout the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area.
Located in downtown Washington, D.C., students are steps away from learning and employment opportunities at nationally renowned hospitals, clinics and school systems.

History
The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences was founded in the early 1940s with an emphasis on enhancing the speech performance of GW students, an emphasis that continues today. Soon after its creation, the department became involved in assisting students with speech disorders and educating professionals who wished to serve persons with communication disorders. These efforts led to the establishment of the GW Speech and Hearing Center in 1946.
