Fluency Disorders

The Fluency Disorders Specialty Clinic provides evaluations and therapy for stuttering, cluttering and rate of speech. We serve preschool and school-aged children, college students and adults.

Speech fluency refers to the smooth forward flow of speech in relation to continuity, smoothness, rate and effort.

Stuttering is the most common fluency disorder. It is an interruption in the flow of speaking characterized by irregular disfluencies (prolongations and blocks) that impact the rate and rhythm of speech.

  • Stuttering modification involves learning new techniques to use before, during or after a stuttering moment to reduce severity.
  • Counseling addresses negative thoughts and feelings associated with speech/stuttering.
  • Cluttering therapy focuses on the symptoms of disorganized language that lead to revisions, phrase repetitions, interjections, poor communication skills, articulation errors, rapid or irregular speech rate, lack of awareness and attention problems.
  • Therapy for rate of speech targets techniques that include vowel prolongation, over-articulation and phrasing.
