Social Communication Disorders
The Social Communication Disorders Clinic provides diverse speech, language and related support to children and adults. The Speech and Hearing Center clinicians run thorough evaluations to uncover and strengthen each individual’s skills and develop an individualized treatment plan. Feeding therapy is also offered. Diagnoses or needs of individuals treated at the clinic may include:
- Autism spectrum disorder (verbal or non-verbal)
- Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
- Developmental delay
- Social (pragmatic) communication disorder
- Social skills group
Treatment Plans
Following the completion of a comprehensive speech-language evaluation and/or AAC evaluation, clinicians work closely with parents/caregivers to develop an individualized treatment plan to support whole-person growth. This plan includes a multimodal approach as well as positive behavioral strategies and sensory integration techniques, as needed.
Individualized social scripts and social stories as well as participation in same-aged social groups are often beneficial. To optimize the individual’s acquisition of skills, treatment plans regularly include carryover activities and strategies for implementation in the community and home. Individual or group treatment (grouped by age) options are available.
